Are lenses suitable for a Nikon F55 SLR camera interchangeable with the new D5100 DSLR camera, or do lenses differ on SLR and DSLR

The F55 is an odd case. The F55 only fully supported AF lenses, though AI lenses fitted, they wouldn't meter and AF-S lenses would meter but not autofocus.

The D5100 is the opposite.AF lenses now don't autofocus, but will auto expose. Only AF-S and AF-I lenses autofocus and autoexpose.AI lenses don't meter, just the same as the F55.

Therefore while the lenses from your F55 will fit, and probably meter, you won't get any AF support.

Confused, that's Nikon for you!

Short answer. Yes but you will have to focus yourself.
