Nikon bodies can use both DX and FX lenses

If you put a DX lens on a full frame camera, the camera automatically crops the sensor to prevent vignetting.

DX is a lens specifically designed for use with cropped (APS-C) sensors and FX lenses designed for use on either full frame or cropped sensor Nikon cameras

Where you may have heard that it can be unsafe to use certain lenses on some cameras is the Canon system

NONE of the cropped sensor specific EF-S lenses can be used on the full frame Canon cameras since they can damage the mirrors on those camera and the mirror can scratch the rear element.

With Nikon, breathe. All is well and you can use any of their lenses with your D5000
