Nikon SLR Cameras

Should I upgrade my camera?

At the moment I have on Olympus E-PL1 which I bought because I wanted to try photography, but didn't want to spend too much in case I didn't get in to it.

The Olympus has loads of really good features and i have been very happy with the results and love photography. Is it worth upgrading to something like the Nikon D3100 or would I not really gain anything significant unless I went for a more expensive camera?

Your aperture won't be enough unless you get more megapixels in the focal length.

Depends on what your PL1 isn't doing for you.

Hi, and good question to ask.
When you upgrade you will find that moving on up the camera ladder into the better DSLR area is what you will want to do. You will find as you do your research that a camera like the D3100 just does not do as good of a job. Plus, save your money up so you can buy the body THEN the lens so you can also up grade on your optics. I do not know what you will be shooting so here is a combo that would be for someone who wants to put large prints on the wall to show off of travel, hanging out around town and some inside images.(sticking with Nikon as your example did)
D 90 with 18-200 nikkor and ad a nice flash to the kit.
Now, I'm looking to upgrade from the D90 in about a year and looking forward to seeing what is going to be happening with the new crop of cameras that will come out by everyone over that year.
Tech is always moving and we will end up replacing our camera every 5 to 7 years now. Un like when I was shooting film only with 30+ year old camera bodies.

The E-PL1 is highly regarded. See the review in http://dpreview.com/...review.com. The basic question is: how is this camera limiting your photography? If you can't answer this question, then getting more expensive gear is not going to get you better pictures. The prime factor in poor image quality these days lies with the photographer, not with the camera. Someone with low level skills is going to get similar results with a cell phone camera as with a $7, 000 Nikon D700. On the other hand, a skilled photographer will take excellent pictures with any camera in typical shooting circumstances.

@ Fuadiddy…

WHAT?

I hope you mean that answer as a joke, because that is the most asinine thing I have ever heard in relation to photography and cameras. Please go back to watching Disney Channel and stay off this forum.

I think it would be better to upgrade cameras, s you can get more serious and take better pictures. Buying a high end bridge camera would be better, since it gives you space to grow, is easy to carry, smaller, does not require extra money for lenses, and isn't too expensive. Canon powershot SX30 IS is really good, so is the Nikon Coolpix L120. Most DLSRs are expensive, hard to replace, and you need to buy lenses and use full manual mode.

I suppose it depends on what you want to get out of photography.

By the looks of it, you could have bought a really good second hand DSLR for the price of your camera. I used to own a D3100 and found it to be a fantastic entry level DSLR… I got some fantastic shots from it.

You should do some research on various DSLRs and work out which one is the best for you for the price. There are loads of reviews and and helpful articles online!

ps. @DakotaRising - you don't have to use full manual mode, I use aperture priority and shutter priority more than full manual.
