I consider the Canon Powershots the dividing line between "bridge" cameras and DSLR's. I would stick with the Canon name for a DSLR. But remember a DSLR is a "money pit". Every time you need a particular shot that your camera is not capable of, your only recourse is to purchase a difference size lens. For instance, I recently realized my 28-to-55 lens would not get as close as I wanted for flowers shots. The "marco" lens was $400.00. I just don't do enough close-up work to warrant such a purchase, so I went in reverse and purchase a used, Canon Powershot SX20 IS! Weird, I know, but at my age (older) I just don't want more than my 28-55mm and 50-200mm lenses.

Canon is a good brand. We have our Canon digital camera, the cheapest one and I love it. Maybe you can try the G12.It is a compact camera but with features close to a DSLR.

Well, it depends a lot on what you need. If you want a small device with excellent Carl Zeiss optics and outstanding resolution, take the Nokia 808 PureView into consideration: it has a 41 MP camera and is available for US$ 700 at Amazon (see source link).

It is also perfect for editing and uploading your pictures directly from the phone itself, wherever you are. I think you should consider it and read about it before making your decision.
