I want to shoot some self protraits and am using my dads Nikon D40 or D80.
I'v gone threw the instructions booklet but they don't explain it much how to set the timer and how to set the camera in general. Those anybody know how to set either camera to take self photographs.

Read the manual for specific instructions. Or look on the camera and see if there's any timer icons. Usually cameras have a 3 and 10-second self-timer.

Turn on The D40.
Look at the back of the camera.
Press the bottom button on the left.
Use the up/down control "wheel" to highlight the "Shooting Mode" box on the LCD screen, it's the one below the ISO selection box.
Press the center of the wheel to Select this then choose the 10s icon.

It also shows this at the top of page 32 in the users manual.

I guarantee this will not work unless you pre-focus the camera on the spot where you'll be sitting, otherwise you'll just end up with blurred photos.

I'll let you work out how to do that.

I have a Nikon D80.To set the self timer delay press the menu button go to the custom setting menu you can set the delay as 2, 5, 10 or 20 seconds. On the top of the camera there's a small display showing the camera settings, there are 2 buttons on the right of this display. One has AF on it the other has symbols, press the button with symbols till you see the timer symbol in the top right of the display. The timer symbol looks like circle with a line in it (like a clock).
Hope that helps.
