I used a Pentax 6Mp DSLR and needed something just a little friendlier to use, I bought a bridge camera thinking it would fill the gap… It didn't… I gave it away.

I then bought the D5100, my first Nikon… And threw a 18-105mm on it to give me the focal range that I needed (Zoom)… Just for a bit of fun I added a third-party DSTE battry-grip… There's a fair bit of interest about these things and I thought i'd give one a try…

This camera was so good that It replaced my Pentax… I bought a D7100 to get the features that I expect from a camera and still find myself using the D5100 it's just a great camera to use, very enjoyable and the quality is absolutely superb… I can't praise it enough and i'm not exaggerating.

I'm not 100% with the 24Mp on the D7100 and my buddies have advised me to grab a D7000 because it's all the camera that i'm looking for… The D7000 shares the same sensor as the D5100.

My opinion is a personal one… Take into consideration though I have 43 years interest in photography over 25 of them professionally.

The D5100 now fills the gap that I expected the bridge camera to fill… With much better quality… It delivers.

Pros - it's an unremarkable camera for its price-bracket, which more-or-less matches the equivalent Canon. Unlike the Canon, it can take MF lenses (although it can't meter with them), but it can't autofocus on lenses without a motor (all Canon lenses are motorised).

Cons - unlike the equivalent Pentax, it has no weather-sealing, a penta-mirror, as opposed to the Pentax' superior pentaprism, and it won't meter with MF lenses.

It's not as good in video performance as the equivalent Sony.
