Have a look at AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G. The advantage this lens has over 1.8D is not only AF ability on your camera but also better built, better optics and long life. This would be for keeps.
Also keep an eye on AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G, another popular lens for portrait.
