What type of cord do I need to tether my Nikon D90 to a portable DVD player?

To do what exactly? A DVD player is designed to play DVDs it's not going to understand what you camera is! Even if you get a cable that connects the two you are not going to be able to get the DVD player and camera to talk to each other!
What are you trying trying to accomplish? If your camera has a video out that matches the video in on the dvd player, I imagine you could use the dvd player as a screen to display video from the camera.
No, you can't. You need a computer that will understand the signal coming from the camera.
You need more than just a large screen to do tethering. There's computer software involved which a simple DVD player can't handle. The minimum requirement is a laptop.
