Nikon Lenses for D3000? - 1

Hi, I'm a beginner "photographer". I have a Nikon D3000 and I was wondering what are some good lenses to start with? And where can I find them at a decent price?

I have the stock lens, AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G. I like it but I want to have other lenses. I kind of want a 50mm, to add a good depth of field look to it.

Shoot with the 18-55mm kit lens for awhile so you can see what you might want to get. Hard for a stranger to suggest something when they don't know what your shooting style is. On a crop sensor camera like your D3000, the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens is pretty general purpose. The 50mm f/1.8 AF-S tends to be a big long for general shooting, however, it is better suited for portraiture than the 35mm lens. Both lenses have wonderful optics. Perhaps you would be interested in a telephoto like a 18-200, 55-200mm, 55-300 or 70-300 lens.

It all depends on what your 18-55 doesn't do for you. If shallow DoF is the main thing then take a piece of masking tape and 'lock" the zoom ring on 35mm. Walk around with it for a few hours, see how that works for you. Do the same thing for 50mm. If either works good for you then get the 35mm or 50mm f1.8 AF-S lens.
