Nikon D90 for wildlife photography?

Alex

I'm buying a new dslr and want to go into wildlife photography because I'm currently doing sports photography.
Do you think that the D90 is good for both wildlife and sports photography? If not then can you recommend a different camera for around the same price that will do both types of photography?

It's got decent AF, can drive AF Nikkor lenses if needed. Perhaps frame rate is a bit low, but if you shoot smart you shouldn't suffer. Only thing is if you're going to be in the weather a lot, the D90 isn't protected from the elements.

One of Nikon's better cameras, but isn't built like a pro.

I do a little bit of both (wildlife and sports - auto racing) with my D300. The D90 is probably quite similar, but not as robust and not as resistant to adverse weather.

Dollar-for-dollar, I think the D90 is a good choice. Either be careful about weather conditions or buy some "armor" for your camera, which is available for under $50.

Depends on the type of wildlife photography you plan to do. Most of the pictures I take are of wildlife that aren't moving (or not moving fast) so extremely fast shutter speeds aren't a concern or frame per second. Adjusting the ISO will help you get faster shutter speeds.

You can do wildlife photography with Nikon D40… It's all about the lens. Many will argue that you need a fast frame rate for sports, but I personally disagree and think that it's better to pick shots than to shoot in all directions. We don't know what lenses you've got, but I'd rather go for an older pro body (D200, D2X) and get a good lens like sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG to get me started. This lens will serve you well for both sports or wildlife photography on a cropped sensor.
