Nikon D7000. Taking pictures inside?

I just got a Nikon D7000 camera. I've been taking pictures fine outside in the sunshine; then I went to use it at the pub to take pictures of my drunken friends at the pub; but the camera is struggling to focus and it won't let me take a picture because it's trying to focus or something. Is this a light problem? How can it be there are lights on inside the pub

Your friends are blury because they are drunk…

You have to put your camera into "Drunk Buddies" mode.

But seriously, all cameras have a hard time focusing in dark settings. It doesn't have to be pitch black, but just dark.

Your camera has a focus assist lamp on it that should come on before taking a photo in a darkly lit room, which illuminates the scene enough for the autofocus to work. It's that little flashlight lens looking thing built into the front of the body near the grip on the right side of the camera (item #1 on page 4 of your manual).

The focus assist lamp should come on for a second when you depress your shutter half-way down.

If this lamp is not coming on (it rather looks like a flashlight turning on the front of your camera), check your camera's settings to see if you have "AF Assist" turned off (custom menu item a7 on page 210 in your manual).

You need a "faster" lens inside. You were probably trying to shoot at an F5.6 or maybe even slower aperture. Use a lens that is an F2 or so in order to be able to focus faster. Any movement with a slow lens would cause the automatic focus to keep trying to attempt to focus. If you don't have access to a faster lens, you could try changing the setup to "manual focus". That may eliminate the problem. Your shutter speed would have to be at least 1/60 of a second or the image will be blurred.

You do not say what lens you are using, but that is the real bottleneck. Likely you are using the "kit" lens, which is a variable aperture zoom, which is terrible in low light.

You want photos in a dark pub? Do this. Get a Nikon 35mm 2.0 lens, (or even a 1.4). Set your camera ISO to 1200 in aperture priority mode with the lens at f2.It will focus fast and easy and you will get shots in dim conditions with no problem.

Part is a light problem, large part is a knowledge problem. You bought an expensive camera and you have not (yet) figured out how to use it.
