Nikon SLR Cameras

Nikon D60, should I keep or sell?

I posted this question in the photography section as well, so thank you for answering if you did there.

I've always been interested in photography and art but I don't know much about it and have no friends who are into it. I bought a D60 a few years ago to start getting into it but the camera is too advanced for my skills. I've read numerous manuals and tutorials but still have only the slightest idea how to use it properly.

There are a couple of photography classes in the area but I work 9-5 every day plus I have night school. I just don't have the time to spend on learning the skills needed to use the camera to its full potential.

Should I keep it and basically use it as a point-and-shoot or should I sell it? Do you think it's even worth anything? I find that my camera phone or my other small digital camera to be sufficient for my uses.

As much as I hate telling people to get rid of their DSLR cameras, I believe that it would be best in this case.

you WANT to use it correctly, but you haven't a clue how, and there's very little way to get the know-how.

selling it would give you some extra cash in your pocket.

A used D60 with the 18-55mm lens in great condition you can sell for around $350 or so. Be willing to go down to around $300

It still should give you photos better than point & shoot cameras.

B&H are still selling used D60s for $250 - body only. They are selling used D60s at $250~$300 on eBay with a kit lens (completed auctions).

Anyone contemplating a new point & shoot vs your D60 would be crazy not to go with yours. That is, if it is in mint condition.

So the $250~300 mark is probably the camera's value - assuming mint condition.

Keep that fine camera you already have and teach yourself. Here…

Only by doing one can truly learn the way

DSLR's and SLR is indeed far from the most automated and easiest things in life. This is not press a button and be done.

Even in full auto mode there are still things you as person need to do.

There's no requirement for you to USE all the camera has to offer true you can keep it in auto and use it as a very powerful compact camera. To get the best out of a DSLR though one needs to know how to handle it and buy better lenses. A nice big flash etc.

I can't say if you should keep or sell

But if you feel that it is like a weight doing nothing. It isn't aiding you either. Sell it if you feel the D60 doesn't makes you happy.

If all it does is attract dust, is never taken out etc. Its a sorry situation for the D60. And maybe indeed a new home is a good option.
