Nikon D60 Digital Flash?

Do i need a special lens to take a family pictures or anything like night sky with stars picture also like to see fireworks? Cause i tryed take a picture fireworks last night and it didn't let me click to take a picture. So wonder if i need one of flashgun or is it cause place i was to dark?

Do some reading about time exposure - that will teach you a lot about this kind of photography.
