Nikon D5100 lenes? Amazing quality?

I have the default lens that comes with my Nikon and a telescopic Nikor lens… I LOVE the quality of the telescopic lens but it's sort of hard to use when doing profiles so I just want a standard lens that will preform great quality like that one… Would a 50mm work good? I do a lot of nature shots and take pictures of models and what not.

The only thing the 50mm will give you over your 18-55mm is lower-light capability and a bit shallower DoF. If that is your needs, then go with it.

Otherwise, try your telephoto for portraiture. You will have to backup a bit, but you can get pretty nice burry backgrounds at around 200mm, even with a f/5.6 aperture.

Here is how it's done:

The 50 mm lens on your D5100 is a medium telephoto (not telescopic - totally different lens design - no lens aperture and no auto-focus system)

If you are interested in shooting wildlife, then you need a lens like the 70-300 mm VR lens

So what you will have is the 18-55 mm lens that covers landscape, groups, full body and head and shoulder shots, a 50 mm for shooting portraits and the 70-300 mm for shooting sports, action and wildlife.

50mm is included in the 18-55mm lens you already have. What exactly are you having difficulty with?
