Nikon D5100 for video or a Canon DSLR?

I'm trying to pick out the best dslr under $1000, that shoots good quality video. I'm really into making movies and I've seen many filmmakers use Canon.

Well "filmmakers" would use film cameras not digital cameras.
I'm a Canon guy and I like my results so Canon is what I recommend.
Here's an example of what I'm getting.

Go with Canon! The video quality is outstanding with 1080p videos. A good dslr under a $1000 would probably be the Canon T3i with the swivel screen for different angles while filming. Also you would want different lenses as well.

The D5100 gets pretty high marks for its video capabilities. For under $1, 000 you're not going to get much better. Here's a sample:
