I can move the part the normally changes the zoom, but the zoom won't change.

It should be fixable but not by you. Get it to a repair shop for a quote - may be cheaper to buy a new lens if it is just the kit lens.

Are you turning the correct ring on the lens? There's one for the zoom and another for focusing.
