Ok. I just purchased a Nikon d50 and have never used one before. I thought that they could not shoot video, but in the main menu I noticed a selection for 'video mode: NTSC or PAL". What is that? Does that mean I can shoot video? If so, how? I would love it if someone could help me out.

Did you do ANY research before you bought that camera?

The first digital SLR cameras to include a video feature was the Nikon D90 (circa 2008). Your D50 was made in 2005, a few years before camera makers thought of such a feature.

The NTSC and PAL modes are for viewing the image files on your camera's memory card using the USB connection.

NTSC is for those areas which use 60 Hz power and PAL for those using 50 Hz power.

Choose the right mode based upon where you live

No, the D50 doesn't shoot video. The D90 was the first DSLR to shoot video.

The D50 has a feature where you can view your images on a TV using the TV's composite video input (yellow RCA connector on the back of some TVs). PAL & NTSC refer to the video systems commonly used around the world.
North America uses NTSC. Europe uses PAL.

See page 62 in your manual. The camera came with an adapter cord, but you can probably use any stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) plug to RCA plug cable. If you don't have a manual, download it from Nikon's web site.

That's for slide shows through the TV.

BTW, out of curiosity, does you D50's flash work? I never have encountered a D50 with a working flash yet. It's driving me nuts figuring out how to fix my 2 one's.

NTSC is use in the US while PAL if for playing back video on a TV made for the European market.

To add onto what was already said (which is completely correct), what they are referring to with the NTSC and PAL is the output format that the camera will output when being played back on a TV. As in, you can hook up your Nikon to a TV either while shooting or while in playback mode and display the pics on a TV screen so that's why it need to know what kind of TV format to output, NTSC or PAL. Hope that helps even more.

KEEROK, I have a D50 that has a working flash. In front of the selector knob on the left hand side of the flash is a lightning bolt, that button alone does not do anything. You have to hold that button down on and use the thumb reel on the right side and look at your flash indicator to see what type of flash you want.
