Nikon d40 has an error saying connecting to pc when shooting and will not clear?

It freezes when shooting and says connecting to pc but there's not a computer in site. Anyone know how to fix it or clear it?
Added (1). It will not reset as soon as you turn it on it goes directly to the screen "connecting to pc"

I would think a camera reset would help.
Look on page 28 to learn how to do that
