Nikon is the BEST.

The A33 has an electronic viewfinder. That's slower and uses a lot more battery power. The Sony lens range is rather expensive when compared to Nikon and Canon.

Well i'm a new owner of Alpha 55 camera. Happy with the camera and trying and testing it in various modes. Sony website says - A33 would have 7fps continuous shooting mode with Auto-Focus and Quick AF Full HD Movie Recording. That's like lot of creative options for you to explore. My advice check Sony user gallery also. Its link is www.flickr.com/groups/sonyindiaalpha/poo…
You will find lot of pictures taken from A33 camera, then you can decide about its shooting ability as well.

Nikon D3100 SLR
Nikon D3100 is an entry-level DX-format camera, ideal for photographers preparing to refine their skills in DSLR cameras. This camera has a CMOS image sensor of dimensions 23.1 x 15.4 mm, which enables you to capture fabulous images at 14.2 megapixels. The swift EXPEED 2 processing engine of this digital SLR supports an aspect ratio of 3:2. You can record your memories and shoot full HD movies on the Nikon D3100 at 1920 x 1080 resolution (24 fps).

Best choice with good features, good overall performance and is value for money product. Go with it.

There are lots of differences, easy to see how this could be confusing.

The design of the Nikon bodies and lenses is closer to the old 35mm SLR style, so the Nikon simply appears more professional. The manual controls for the D3100 are easier to use than on the SLT-A33. Nikon color tones are more neutral than the A33. Nikon images at ISO 1600 and higher have a little less noise. It's easier to find lenses by Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina for Nikon than for Sony.

The Sony SLT-A33 is designed foremost for Auto operation by casual photographers. The Sony 18-55 kit zoom is actually pretty nice, I like it a little better than the Nikon.In-body stabilization, in some cases, gives lenses for Sony a lower price than the Nikon VR models. The Sony LCD is nicer. The A33 video really beats the D3100.

Short version: D3100 for serious students, A33 for quickie family captures. The design differences result in different handling. That handling difference may override all the fussy technical differences in the end.
