Nikon D3100 lens compatibility? - 1

I currently have a Nikon F55 SLR film camera with an 18-55mm Nikkor AF lens and a 70mm-300mm Nikkor AF lens. I'm thinking of purchasing a Nikon D3100 body and was wondering if my existing lens are compatible? Or would I be better buying a D3100 kit with lens?

Your D3100 is an entry level camera and thus needs AF-S Nikkor lenses if you intend to use the auto-focus feature on your camera.

The Nikkor AF lenses will require you to manually focus your lenses using the electronic reangefinder on the lower left hand side of the view finder.

If you want to use your AF lenses on a new Nikon dSLR and auto-focus with them, you need to buy an older Nikon D90 or new D7000

Manually focusing lenses has been done for decades, so with a little effort, you too can learn.

A D3100 will not autofocus your lenses. You need a D90, D7000, etc. To autofocus them.
