It is, but if you want to be able to use auto-focus, you will want to buy the AF-S Nikkor 70-300 mm lens

Nikon makes a cheap 70-300mm and a good one. You are looking at the cheap one. If you can't afford the good one, you would be better off getting the AF-S 55-200mm VR. 300mm is useless when it is a magnified blur.

I think that was the Tamron-designed (and possibly built) lens for Nikon. The silver lens was most likely originally intended for Nikon's "Pronea S" APS film format SLRs (which were also silver), which were still around in 2001.

It will still work on your camera, but a better choice would be the currently produced 55-200mm or even the 55-300mm lenses. Or if you want to shell out a little more, the currently produced AF-S 70-300mm lens.
