Nikon D3000 equivalent?

I want to start photography, taking pictures of skateboarding is really want i want to do.
i really wanted to get the Nikon D3000 as i have a few friends who have this camera and a lot of people say it is extremely good, especially for a beginer. But recently i found out they don't make them any more, can someone please tell me a good equivalent of it? Is the CANON EOS 1000D as good as it?

Who told you they don't make them any more.

Call Nikon and they can tell you where to buy one.

The D3000 gave way to the D3100 so a 3000 will be increasingly difficult to find but they're still out there. Canon's 1000D is the direct competitor; however, all of these have a frame rate of about 3 per second. For skateboarding pix, you might enjoy something a little faster with 5 or 6 frames per second. Just a thought.

You can get a D3000 at Walmart for $500.

The D3000 was especially good for the beginner because of the guide mode, this has been carried onto the D3100. However this feature isn't found on any other DSLR camera.
The trouble is that once you've covered the basics that are in the guide mode can be found anywhere on the internet, so this really isn't any great advantage of the camera, and you'll probably feel that you need to upgrade within six months to a year.
You would be better spending your money on a proper SLR which has a lot more growing room. A camera such as a Nikon D80 or Canon 30D or 40D are all more advanced cameras with which you can learn the basics just as easily but also you can be doing more advanced stuff when you feel ready.

D3000 would soon have its end of life. It has been replaced by d3100.although not yet discontinued, it will soon be. 1000d would have been its competitor but 1000d is years older than d3000. If I were you, I'd save a littler more for d3100, it performs miles better than d3000.
