I want to take pictures for my rings. Could anyone tell me which one is better, Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens, Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX? I'm a newbie and have Nikon D90 so please explain for me a little detail.

Use macro settings! Just use the 40mm

neither of those lenses you have are ideal for macro shooting.

The 40mm would be better since it is a macro lens, and therefore can focus closer to the subject

the 35mm is more a general use lens for dx cameras

You'll need a lens that can focus at very close distances, preferably at 2 inches or less. Get a macro lens, around 50mm would do. The word Macro (or Micro in Nikon) should be explicitly indicated so your choices would be like a 50mm Macro or maybe a 35mm Macro.
