Need advice for a photo shoot

I'm an amateur photographer. It's nice to have some controlled lighting, unfortunately for this upcoming shoot, i have none available. I need to shoot pieces of furniture in natural light and the environment will prove difficult, since it will be in a open warehouse with no proper walls as backdrop, it's going to be dusty, etc.

i have a nikon d90 and an sb600 as means of equipment along with a tripod. How do i go about shooting these pieces of furniture, making them look professional enough for a catalog? I know photoshop helps too, but I also need advice on how to have good lighting to tone down the not so good state of the background. I also need advice on making a decent plain background in photoshop that might pass off for a studio background in case things don't work out.

Open your aperture as far as you can. This will decrease the depth of field and blur out the background. To help this, place the furniture as far in front of the backdrop as possible. You could use a bedsheet or some similar large piece of cloth or paper to cover the background. Get your flash off camera and get it as close to your furniture as possible. Light intensity drops off twice as fast as distance so objects further from the light source will be less illuminated and therefore less noticeable. In PS, you can put the main subject and background on separate layers, saturating the subject or increasing brightness or… Or. You could darken or blur the background. You don't say what kind of catalog but plain or blurred background may work out for you.
