Its almost my B-day and I would really like a DSLR camera

Looking for a DSLR camera mainly for taking action photos like Bmx and Skate
Played around with one of my friends Nikon and loved the experience.

Looking at a camera not more than $1400 and still good investment for further use later on in my life.
A basic description what i need and a specific camera would be nice to know

Added (1). I can get the Nikon D3100 with 18-88mm + 55-300mm lenses for R 8 999 that about $1320 do you think its a good price?

When I shoot motocross, I use the Nikkor 18-200 mm lens.

A Nikon D3100 costs $700 and the 18-200 mm lens, $785, so slightly over your budget, but not much. The combination of the two lenses, 18-55 mm and 55-200 mm will provide you with the same shooting options, at a lower cost.

Since the D3100 can also shoot Full HD video (1080p) and is the only entry level dSLR that can auto-focus in the video mode, it is well worth saving the extra pennies to buy this combination.

Sometimes due to the tracks restrictions, it is not possible to compose your shots exactly as you want them, so if you shoot at the cameras highest resolution (Large, Fine). Later you can crop a little without losing much detail and quality.

This is such a case. Even using the lens at 200 mm, I was still not close enough for my taste. Using Photoshop to crop in about 10% made the difference.

Listen to Fhotoace, he knows what he is talking about. When it comes to lenses though, you can switch out that Nikkor and get an equivalent from Sigma for less. You can get the Sigma 18 to 200 for $369 from B&H.

Considering that you can get the D3100 for with Kit lens for $649, that would bring your total price down to $1069 and you cover that entire range with a single lens. The Sigmas has good reviews.
