Beginner photographer. Buying a Nikon D3300 and not sure which lens package to get?
I'm wanting to buy a Nikon D3300 DSLR and have 2 options to choose from on the same site. One is £279.99 and the other £299.99. One lens is described as "18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR II Zoom Lens" and the other is "18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens". I was just wondering what the "VR II" is and whether it is worth the extra £20?
"VR," is Nikon's in-lens image stabilisation system, the D3300 comes as standard with the 18-55mm VR II, I don't think there's any difference, unless the dealer's trying to offload some unsold stock. Real world, you probably wouldn't notice.
Andrew is correct.
The 18-55 mm that comes with that camera is just what you need to have as you learn the fundamentals of photography and many of the popular camera techniques. That lens can shoot decent landscapes, group shots, full body shots as well as head and shoulder photographs.
Since it can take over a year before you might become competent, keep using that lens for now.
In the meantime, start saving your pennies for your next lens. Which you buy will have more to do with the type subjects you wish to photograph.
Here is a link that shows you what various focal length lenses "see". Spend some time on that site and use it to help you determine which lens you want to budget for that will find itself in your camera kit in the next few years
Although I'm almost sure they are the same, look at the lenses. Nikon does have different versions of the 18-55mm. If you can afford the more expensive one though, no problem. Buy that one and be done with it.
