More lens help (not sure which is better)?

Okay so its down to these two lens for my nikon d60.
I shoot outdoor/action shots so which lens is better?
thee 55-300mm or the 70-300mm

Which one allows more light in, the larger f-stop. 2.8 is better than 5.6 etc.

The 55-300 gives you a little more flexibility as far as working distance. The 70-300 might be a little tight in certain situations and you'll have to back up or forget about the shot.
The 55-300 is a DX lens, which means you would not be happy with the lens if you ever buy a full format camera. That may not be a major consideration, though.
The 70-300 is a full format lens and it has two ED glass elements to help control colors better. I have used the lens for about years and I'm very happy with it. Here are 450-some examples:
Now…
Have you considered the new 28-300 VR lens? I recently upgraded to that from the 70-300 and it is a sweet lens. First of all, it is 2/3 stop faster. It is an FX lens, so you can use it to full advantage on any Nikon camera. It will focus as close as 18" at all focal lengths. The other two can only focus as close as feet. I shoot a lot of sports (race cars) and also nature and this is now my favorite lens for versatility. I can do almost all of my shooting with this lens. (If I think I need a wider lens, I back it up with a 17-55 zoom.) Yes, it costs more than your camera did, but you could use this lens forever. Here are almost 50 samples

Depending what you are trying to shoot, think about the Sigma 150-500mm or Sigma 50-500mm
