Looking for a new event lens for Nikon D60?

Currently I'm working with a NIkon D60. I have the normal 55 mm lens with a 5.6 aperture, and a 200 mm with what seams to have a slightly wider aperture. Problem is I have become more interested in taking pictures of live events or concerts. Even though I'm a fan of blurring pictures I want to start capturing images without having to use a flash. I was trying to find a lens with a wider aperture that wasn't too expensive seeing that I'm a novice. The way I figure, wider aperture means higher shutter speeds. I loose depth of field but I could always get in closer. Any ideas? Many events are indoors.

Would that be an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6? That would be a great lens for event giving you wide to short telephoto on a crop sensor dSLR. For faster shutter speeds, get the smallest f/number lens you can afford. It's the same lens you use to blur backgrounds and get pictures in low light without using a flash.

A wide-aperture lens will help you get shorter shutter speeds in low light, thus helping reduce blurr induced by camera movement. As you have noticed, the wider the aperture (low numbers such as f2.8, not f5.6) the more depth of field gets reduced. You seem to have the idea pretty well in your head. Now you just need the cash to buy the lens!

Depends on the focal length. 50mm f1.8 is an option but that's, for the moment, still manual focus. Sigma makes a 18-50 f2.8, tamron makes a 17-50 f2.8
