I will be taking photos at a club event, what kind of lens should I use?

My friend asked me to take pictures at a club/party we're throwing. It's be my first shoot of something like this. I'm an amateur photographer with a nikon d/3100 and kit lens. The only other lens I have is the 50mm f1.8 manual focus lens. I was thinking of using the 50mm lens because I think it shoots better in low light. Or will my stock lens do?

Add an SB600 flash and flash diffuser and you should be set.
If you don't have an external dedicated flash, you can buy a Gary Fong "Puffer" and use it over your cameras internal flash.
The "stock" 18-55 mm lens will give you much more flexibility than the medium telephoto 50 mm lens, especially when shooting "group" shots
