Leave shutter open on nikon d5000?

Okay i know you can leave the shutter open by holding down the button & i know you can do it with a remote but i don't have one & i was wondering if it's possible to just leave it open for a certain amount of time like on it's own?

No.

You either have to hold the shutter release open for as long as you want or buy a less than $15 Nikon wireless remote and hold its button down for as long as you want.
