Is there a generic flash I can use for the Nikon D60 and get full functionality?
I have a Vivitar DZ40 but it broke and I couldn't program it.
There are several makers out there but for function you'll have to buy one specific to your camera.

Or try a local store
Describe what you mean by "full functionality"? If you mean full iTTL flash control, yes there are.
The least expensive, decent flash with iTTL is the Metz 36. $100 or so.
Then there's the Sigma 530 DG ST, at $150… Pretty good stuff.
At the $225 mark, you have the Sigma 530 DG Super and the Metz 48 AF-1. The Sigma is a little more powerful, but the Metz is the better unit. Both will do just about anything a Nikon flash will do, including iTTL slave.
At the $400 or so mark, there sits the Metz 58 AF-1, the equal of the SB-800, and almost equal to the SB-900. The SB-900 is unique in that is has a zoom head that can match a 200mm lens, no other flash can do that.
At less than $100, there isn't a lot to choose from if you must have TTL control. There are a lot of flashes that claim to be TTL, and to be the best thing since sliced bread, but they aren't.
If you can work with an auto flash, the Vivitar 285HV is still on the market… $80-$90 brand new.
Generic and compatibility has its limits. It's either you get a cheap generic and use it with limited functionality or spend more than the cost of the camera itself and have all the possible whistles and bangs that you can get out of the combination.Me? I'm pretty much comfortable using flash in Auto mode. I never liked TTL. I feel the the flash always gets it wrong.
