Should I use generic accessories for a Nikon D5100?
I'm going to be purchasing a Nikon D5100 this week. I was wondering if it is okay to use (much cheaper) generic accessories when it comes to the USB cable, battery, and battery charger?
Buy an excellent camera and outfit it with cheap junk? That makes no sense at all.
The batteries no. Generic batteries have a bad history, don't buy them. Buy only genuine Nikon gear for your camera - you'll be much better off in the long run.
Jim is right, again. Much cheaper means much cheaper quality. Like using Walmart spray paint to paint your Corvette.
Cheap batteries can leak & destroy your camera. They can even expand and get stuck in your camera.
Nikon brand things cost more for a reason. Quality!
The 5100 comes with a battery & charger.
For uploading pictures to your computer, buy a card reader - don't bother with the USB cable.
The original battery, charger and the usb cable come with the camera. No need to get extra charger and the usb cable.
The battery quite long lasting. You should try out whether the length of the battery life (fully charged) is able to last for your entire typical photo shooting session. If yes, you do not need to buy an extra. If no, you should get the original nikon battery EN-EL14.
tip: Try not to transfer photos/videos from camera to computer using the usb cable. This method will drain the battery. You should get a separate sd card reader. Anyway, most laptops have a built in card reader.
