Is the Nikon D40 very outdated right now?
I bought it new a year ago for $415. How well does it compare to newer cameras like d3100 etc etc?
Just because a camera is a few years old, it won't suddenly give you bad photos. Your d40 may not do the video that newer ones can give you beautiful photos, assuming that the photographer knows how to use it.
It is very outdated, after it came the D60, then the D3000 and then the D3100. Doesn't mean it's not a good camera for some people.
It's a little outdated compared to the new ones.

Depends.
It doesn't match the low light performance of the more recent entry level DSLRs, but it comes relatively close - it was excellent at that when it was released.
The MP figure isn't really an issue, it's enough for poster sized prints.
The AF system is very, very basic… But it already was like that when the D40 was released. If it does the job for you (i.e. If you're into a kind of photography that isn't very demanding on the AF system, such as landscape shots), then that's a non-issue.
Video and live view are absent on it. Live view is useful sometimes, but i rarely need it. Video… I don't care about it at all.
Its flash sync speed is brilliant. Really. 1/500s is awesome, a top notch figure that is pretty much unmatched even among more recent professional grade cameras.
Anyway, i upgraded from a D40 to a D90 and used to keep my D40 at my Girlfriend's house so i don't always need to lug my primary camera around when i went over. For the weekend, until the camera broke. Even being used to a D90, i loved the D40 for its simplicity.
Edit: added a missing "rarely" at live view
