Is the Nikon D3000 good for portrait taking?

I'm looking for a camera that's good for, photography, of course, and portrait picture taking, I've read the reviews and stuff, but I would like to hear from someone who actually has the camera, or something similar.

Yes, the D3000 is just fine for taking portraits - pretty much any DSLR is. Whether or not such shots come out well depends more on the skill of the photographer and on the quality of the lens than on the camera body.

Just take a look here and select 'portraits':

It has one handicap though, it won't autofocus with the 50mm/1.8D lens. This lens is very popular for portraits, so that may be an issue for you. You'd have to get the 50mm/1.4G (not D) lens if you want autofocus with a prime lens of that focal lenght. That one is even better, but also $200 more expensive.

It isn't the camera you should be worried about - it should be YOU…

if you ain't got the talent or ability, then you will be unable to take portraits with ANY camera…

I agree with Jens, you should use 50mm lens for portraits. You can have nice and sharp portrait and blurry background and it gives the sense of the depth in space. I have Nikon D80 and 50mm 1.4 and it works perfect for portrait taking! Google photos taken with 50mm and you will see the effect.

Portraits is not much about cameras but all about skill and light. Get the right light in the right place, get the model comfortable and you're 80% there already

Any DSLR camera including the D3000 is great for portrait-taking as long as you have the right lens.

You may want to consider purchasing the AFS 85mm f/1.4G, which will give you great portraits.
