Is it worth buying a nikon d40 for £100 which says it has problems with the shutter?
In the newspaper there's an advertisement for a nikon d40 camera, it says it's in nearly perfect condition, but it says there's a problem with the shutter, i haven't phoned to ask about the certain problem, but, do you think it is worth buying it for 100£? How much are they to buy brand new?
The replacement camera for the entry level D40 is the Nikon D3100

I would call Nikon and see what they charge to replace the shutter in a D40 before spending your hard earned pennies
No. A 100 quid plus a shutter repair is also the price of a very nice used D40 or D60. Things like this are only interesting if you're either very mechanically skilled or you're looking for a D40 as parts donor and even then it's expensive.
There's of course an outside problem that the camera is fine and the user does not know what he's doing.
"how much are they to buy brand new"
You can't buy a brand new D40, Nikon stopped making them a couple of years ago.
Second-hand D40s are available but TBH you'd be better buying a new camera.
I wouldn't buy a camera with a dodgy shutter.
No. You can get a working Sony A200/Nikon D40/Canon 350D for about £150-£180.
