Is it better to keep your lens cap on or off while your not using it?
I just bought a nikon d5100 slr and i barely know *** about it
anything good helpful details will help.
For storage or carrying the camera any distance put the lens cap on - it protects the front of the lens.
And if it is on the lens you know where the lens cap is.
But when you are in situation where you are likely to take a photo put it in a pocket or you camera bag.

On for storage and of course, OFF, when shooting.
Is this a trick question? Definitely on. Your glass is everything on your lens. You want to take care of it and protect it as best you possibly can.
No, the lens cap is just included as part of the packaging. After you take the lens out you're supposed to throw the lens cap out and store your lens with a scouring pad there instead. It'll put a nice buff on your lens.
