Nikon SLR Cameras

Is it a good idea to ask for a DSLR camera for Christmas?

I've never had one in my life, but I feel like I would love to learn how to use one. My dad thinks I shouldn't, and he says I already have a digital camera, so why would I want another one?

But my digital camera does not satisfy my needs, I need something better and more serious, but DSLR cameras are so pricey.

Can you suggest a DSLR camera for noob-amateur-beginners? I've already thought about a Nikon D40 or a Rebel XS but I'm not very good at choosing cameras, so a little help would be… Very helpful.

Indeed you are right.

You should learn a little about DSLR cameras before you go out and ask for one. Just get a book and start reading, or look online for some "lectures."

Anyway, the cheapest DSLR cameras from Nikon and canon (NEW) are the Nikon D3000 and the Canon Rebel Xs, which are both excellent cameras and will do what you want them to do. They will satisfy your needs.

Other models that you can look at are the Nikon D5000, Nikon D3100, Canon Rebel T1i, and Canon Rebel T2i. They are more expensive, but have more features.

I thought the D40 had been dropped as a model by Nikon about 2 years ago. Make sure you know what you are talking about or you dad will make mincemeat of your request! Go for the latest 'entry-level' model of Nikon, Sony or Canon, or maybe the next model up if you really think you dad can be persuaded.
