Is a Nikon D3100 too much to ask for?
Is a Nikon D3100 too much to ask for, for a 16 year old? I love to take pictures of everything and I'm going to be making films. I love photography and film and I think of ways to set things up for a picture and all I have is my ipod camera, which truly sucks. So, for my 16th birthday I'm thinking of asking for the Nikon D3100, but I think it's too expensive!
Help? I really want a great camera. Do you know any cameras as great as the Nikon D3100 but not as expensive?
Added (1). Also, this would be the ONLY thing I'd ask for, of course.
What I would do if I were you is go for it! But don't demand it. Don't say, "this is want I want, go ahead and buy it for me." Maybe even offer to chip in a little, even though it's your 16th birthday. Maybe do a 60/40 split, 70/30, whatever floats your boat.
Another idea is to not ask for the camera, but just say, "All I want is some money, so when the time comes around for wanting something big, I can start with a good bass line." Then take any other money that your relatives give you for your birthday, and it will all add up.
I'm not a photography expert, so I don't really know. I have an olympus camera that I love, but I'm not a serious photographer. So, I think if you try one of those, you will not feel any sort of remorse in the near future.
For some people, it may be too much -- especially if your parents are the ones paying for it.
dSLRs are an investment so if you think the D3100, currently one of the LEAST expensive dSLRs, is too expensive, then it will cost you a lot more in the long run for things like lenses and other accessories.
If you want to hold off on getting a dSLR, ask for a bridge camera like the Nikon P500 instead. You still have manual controls to learn photography with, as well as a nice 36x optical zoom.

It will only be too much if you haven't given anything in advance. How are your grades in school? How are you at home with the household chores? How is your relationship with your brothers and sisters? How are you with your parents? If you truly deserve to have a dSLR, your parents may even get you something better. I know. I gave my son a D50 when got to second rank in his class and he just asked for a lowly point-and-shooter.
How are we supposed to know your parents financial situations, and there policies on spoiling there kids on there Birthdays. I own a D5100 and saved with my own hard earned money, so just be thankful to even get any camera!
Canon EOS T3 (lil bit less megapixels), Pentax K-r (better than both).
I hope you get the camera!
