The tricky part is getting that kit lens to focus if the light is too dim. If there's no distant street light to lock onto you could try turning your car's headlights onto something distant. Lock on your autofocus, and then switch to manual, being careful not to upset the adjustment.
Long exposures can run down you battery with few shots. Start with a full charge and bring a spare.
