I need studio lighting basics ideas?

I'm an amateur photographer with an interest in portraits. I'm trying to build my own studio at home, and need a list of basic items (flashes, lights, soft-boxes) that will be essential in starting this process. I want to take professional looking portraits. I have a Nikon D5100.
