So i'm about to buy a nice underwater housing for my nikon d7000, and these are the two lens i'm looking at Tokina AT-X AF 10-17mm f3.5-4.5 DX vs Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX. Which one is a better investment and purchase? They are only 40 dollars difference right now and they are both great…

I will mostly be using it for underwater of course but will the 2.8 on the nikon really be that much better?

Id go the nikon, basically coz its a nikon. You get the better build quality (not saying tokina are badly built) with the nikon. The f/2.8 on the nikon is better than the tokinas f/3.5-4.5 it will, make a difference, although not substantial

You realize of course that both of these lenses are fisheyes?

On the other hand, not a bad idea to use a fisheye for underwater use, as you will have the maximum view.

I own the Nikon 10.5, but I also have a few Tokina lenses - which are top notch, so each lens is really pretty good. This particular Nikon is built really well, better than the typical consumer-grade Nikon lenses (some of which are not as good as the Tokinas).

Since the Tokina is a Zoom, can you easily change the zoom length in your underwater housing?

I would normally for the faster lens, but we're less than 1 EV between them (at least at the wide angle end). I dunno, I really like both lenses, but I'm just not sure about a fisheye-zoom.

My only issue is that more-or-less, the fisheye lenses have a 180 deg field of view. This means that when you put either lens behind an undewater housing, the part of the housing in front of the lens is going to be visible in the photo. This might be the one time when the 17mm zoom end of the Tokina might work better, as you can zoom in until you can no longer see the sides of the camera housing.

Otherwise, I think I'd prefer the Nikon.
