I have nikon d3100 for 5 years. Would it still be good for travel photos?
I'm planning to buy fujifilm xa10 as a replacement. Should I change it?
I've always chosen to take my tried and true camera, one that I know how to work well, on trips. Sometimes using a new camera that you aren't as familiar with can cause problems. If the older camera works well, use it.
What does your current camera not do which you'd like it to be able to do?
If the answer is "nothing" then it's still a perfectly good camera which you know and understand. A new camera will not make you a better photographer.
Usually, even if there's something the current camera can't do then the fix for that is most commonly to buy another lens which does enable you to achieve the shots you're after.
If the problem is that you find your current system too large and bulky then switching to an interchangeable lens CSC camera such as the X-A10 is a sensible choice. My wife uses the Fujifilm XE-1 and the X-T1 and the results she gets are winning her plenty of awards. Her only real criticisms are that the XE-1 has not been reliable; a recommended firmware update bricked the camera and Fuji charged a small fortune for the repair, and the battery life on both models is poor as it is on many CSC models. By contrast, my Pentax K5ii battery has never even got low on me even after taking many hundreds of photos in a day, but I still carry a spare battery just in case. But my gear is definitely heavy and bulky but I've invested so much in the system that switching to my own Fujifilm gear would simply cost too me too much. Also my gear is all weatherproof, my wife's Fujifilm models are not, so I can go on shooting in rain, snow, and sea spray when her gear has to be safely stowed away.
The only thing my gear can't do that I'd like it to do is to shoot underwater, so I bought a totally different camera especially for that.
Yes it will be just fine. Just make sure the battery still holds a charge. When rechargeable batteries get old they lose their ability to hold a charge and that can be very annoying on a trip. Amazon will have a new battery for a reasonable price.
Yes, the D3100 is good for travel photos. It is relatively small, the kit lens is good for wide and modest telephoto shots, and you are used to it. I always have an extra battery and memory card when I travel with my D90 and recommend you do the same. I have found that while the Nikon battery is more expensive, it is worth it because it lasts a lot longer.
A number of years ago, I used a Nikon D100 to shoot travel photos when I sailed through the Caribbean over a 4 month period of time.
The two lenses I used the most was a 12-24 mm (for onboard photos and land/seascapes) The other was a 24-85 mm for all the other photo opportunities.
The Fuji mirrorless cameras are great, however, you will have to replace any of your current lenses with Fujifilm X-mount lenses for use with the Fuji.
Here is one of the shots I got while sailing between Luperón, Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands under full sail. The other shot is of Cat Beach, Falmouth Harbour, Antigua. Remember that this shot was taken using a camera with a 6 mp sensor and reduced in resolution for posting on the Internet
OF COURSE! First, it's a well-built camera and you should be able to re-acquaint yourself with it quickly enough; it's still a great camera for many hobbyists and enthusiasts. Besides, if you have a more expensive camera, which one you'd rather lose to theft while on vacation? But the camera will yield good/bad shots in proportion to your skills and knowledge with lighting; a newer or better camera AIN'T going to make you a better photographer. I'd recommend you charge the camera batteries and test them out well before the trip so you'll know whether to anticipate problems with the battery keeping their charge (buy a new Nikon brand battery and you won't regret it) and take along an extra memory card, which is a good practice anyway, yes or YES? Practice with it, around the home and around where you live to get re-acquainted with it and to re-sharpen your skills.
Lastly, depending on where you're going, you may want to buy a electrical current converter for recharging your batteries and your other electric personal grooming accessories/devices (hair dryer, etc); there's no harm in being prepared so ask ahead of time (travel agent or travel coordinator, whatever).
IF the camera is still functional, has working rechargeable batteries (more than one is always better) that keeps its charge, and a good memory card (get another just in case… Worth having a spare), then it's still a good camera. Why do you even have doubts?
No. Not at all. By now it is ready to fall apart at any moment. I will do you a favor & take it off of your hands for $50.00, & I will be happy to pay for shipping.
Yes, replace it.
You obviously never seemed to appreciate what a dSLR can do.
I still use my Nikon D80. I've had photos published taken with it.
A new camera won't make you a better photographer.
If that Nikon camera still works for you, then it will be fine for travel.
- What would be a good, reasonably priced, travel lens for my nikon d3100?
- What camera would be good for travel, high resolution, and good for beginners?
- Is the Nikon D90 DSLR still a Worthy camera to buy as it is now 4 Years old?
- Is the Nikon D5300 still worth it being 7 years old compared to newer camera models in the same price range?
- Would the Nikon D5100 be good for shooting still photos of MMA or Boxing?
