When a dslr is filming video the mirror of the camera must flip up blocking the viewfinder. All live view is is just viewing the video on the lcd because the view finder is blocked. You must be in live view to press the red button and record video. On a d3100 to get to live view you flick the tab right around the red button and to record you press the red button.

DSLR cameras use "live view" when recording video.

Live view can also be used thus:

* photographing through a microscope
* photographing through a telescope
* shooting under conditions where UV light could damage the photographers eyes (welding for instance)
* shooting products in a studio

LiveView is the use of the LCD as the viewfinder for looking and framing the subject before you press the shutter release button. In short, it's use for finding your target, for aiming.
