Usually it's a faulty cord that is cutting out before all of the images are transferred. Try using a card reader instead. They are cheap as hell now days.
What software are you using to transfer?
Don't connect the camera directly to the computer, use the memory card to import the files to your computer. If you don't have a card reader, you can purchase one for under $20 - it is the best and easiest way to import your images to the computer.
Edit: I wonder if you haven't imported some files already - I'd check your computer. If you use a card reader, you can actually access all the files on the card manually, open them and save them to your computer. Using a card reader, you insert the card and then look at My Computer for the drive - usually D or E. Click on that drive and it will show DCIM - open the files and look at all the photos. Select All and copy to your computer. Check to make sure all are saved before clearing the card and deleting all the files.
