My Nikon D200 all of the sudden won't focus correctly. Anyone have a fix for this?
When I try to focus on something, the lens moves but won't focus on what I want. Just wondering if there might be a fix to this. Camera wasn't damaged or anything. Just wondered if there's a fix to this?
This could be due to a couple of factors.
- Are your contacts dirty? Use a cotton swab to clean both the contacts on the lens and the camera mounts. This will very often fix the problem.
- Is your focus set correctly? Try setting it to AF-S and use the center focus point.
- Are you trying to focus on a solid color, or does your subject have enough definition/contrast for the AF system to get a good fix?
- Are you too close to your subject? All lenses have a minimum focus distance, and will hunt (spin) back and forth if you're too close.
Of course it could be that there's some damage to the camera and/or lens. Maybe moisture or something got in, so even if you didn't drop there could still be damage.
Finally, is this happening to just one lens, or to all of your lenses? If it's just one, that would indicate a problem with the lens; if it's all of them, this would be an issue with the camera.
What are you focusing on? The sensors require contrast to achieve lock.
Are you saying that if you try to take an image of, say, a newspaper at a distance within the range of the lens, it won't focus? If that's the case, the camera or the lens (or the communication between them) is not functioning correctly and needs to be looked at.
Some possibilities:
- Your AF targets are not where you expect them.
- Not enough light in the image to focus properly.
- Trying to "shift" focus but your AF system is in continuous mode.
- Too close to a subject without a macro lens. Many lenses require at least three feet of distance.
