Hello everyone I'm an ispiring photographer going to photography school next year and my Nikon D3000 has too little of mega pixels for the program so looking into new cameras, I've heard amazing things about the Canon 7D and also was interested in it for starting to make short films. Please give your opinion if this is the right camera choice. Thank you.

Added (1). Thank you all for your input, I only own the nikon body and the lens it came with, nothing more. I do love the feel of Nikon and have heard its a better photography camera and Canon is more for videos but not quite sure… I don't find switching brands to be a great deal for I only own the kit. If there's a better camera out there Nikon or Canon please share, thank you.

Yes, 7D is a great choice if you want a good all around digital still/digital video combo. I'm surprised your curriculum/program is requiring so much megapixel. Megapixel is a minor aspect to image quality.

Should you choose 7D, I'd look into getting EF lenses rather than EF-S lenses, in the case you choose later on to get a full-frame model.

Have fun

I was going to say "Yes, definitely," until I read that you have a Nikon D3000. How much of an investment have you made in the Nikon system? Different lenses, flashes, releases, etc? If you have anything beyond what came with the D3000 kit, you are making the wrong choice to switch to Canon. Upgrade within the Nikon family.

As for megapixels, I too am wondering why it should be such a big deal for your photography school. I could lecture you on the diminishing returns of more megapixels, but plenty other people have done it (see the link for one).

That's a great camera. You may consider the Nikon D7000 since you already own Nikon lens(s). I have used the D7000 for professional work as a back up fro stills and also for filmmaking. You can search youtube for "Patricia Mario, who knows" to see a music video shot on a D7000

I highly doubt that "the program" has a megapixel requirement, but whatever you say, Jack.

The canon 7D is a nice camera I'm sure. If you want to waste money buying it (instead of using your perfectly capable Nikon) then that's up to you.

If want to make films then it makes more sense to get a video camera.

Nikon is not better for photography than canon (or vice versa). Canon is not "more for videos" either (whoever told you that is crazy). With these sorts of comments, I can only say that it won't make a difference what camera you end up using for your class.
