Nikon SLR Cameras

I'm looking into buying a used Nikon d40x?

It's pretty cheap, but I'm worried about the photo quality(it's only 10megapixels). I have a few 35mm film cameras, but this would be my first dslr. I want to begin a portfolio for college so I need a camera that would be able to take photos that I can print 8x10s of and still have a clear resolution. Would this be a good fit?

"it's only 10megapixels"

So is my D200.

Don't fall for the hype. (And the D40 is actually a better camera. But it's only 6mp. And it made outstanding 8" x 10" prints.)

I have to agree. If you can find a D40, gently used, you will have a better camera. I have made 16x20 prints from a 6 mp sensored camera with no problem. When your camera has a large sensor like the D40, 6 mp is plenty.

Higher MP count does not = better image quality. Save your pennies for a new D3100 or D3200 or Rebel T3 or T3i.

The D40 is " only " 6MP, not 10. I've seen magazine quality photos taken with the D40. But the D40 is long discontinued.
I think you will be better off with a D3100.It will produce great 8 x 10's if you take the time to learn how to use the camera.
EDIT: I just noticed you said D40x, I'd avoid this one. It got lower reviews than the D40.
And thanks to whomever gave me the thumbs down. I was collecting them, had a bunch, but lost them all. Most have had hole in me pocket.

Ah ha… You have fallen for the mega pixel myth - more is better it's simply not true.
Only 10… You really are new to digital photography. 10 is excellent.

But, there are risks to used. Know everything you can about the gear before you buy. Shoot with it and look at the shots. Get the shutter count if you can. Has it been roughed or beaten up? Wet?
How have the lenses and body been treated? Has the gear always been in a bag or case when not in use? You can think of many other questions as well.

The most important thing is to shoot with it first.

If it is in really good condition at a good price don't be afraid to get it. Something newer and more expensive could be a little bit better, but an undamaged D40x can still be very good.

An 8×10 printed from a 10MP image will have over 300 ppi resolution, perfectly fine for a handheld print. You can even push up to 16×20 before pixelation becomes apparent.

If your 35mm kit has Nikon/Nikkor AF-S lenses, all the more reason to get a D40X body, or another decent Nikon body if you prefer.

(If your kit uses Canon EF lenses, just go for an EOS Rebel instead.)
