How well does the Nikon D5100 work at concerts?
I'm planning on getting the Nikon D5100 in a few weeks or so, just in time for a concert. I was wondering if the camera works well at recording videos in loud environments (I'm attending a hip-hop concert - to be more specific, Watch the Throne with Kanye West and Jay-Z) and if the built-in microphone can capture audio just fine.
No. The built in mics are OK, but they are no where near good enough to capture a concert.
With this camera you'll never get in - copyright laws. It's considered by the concert folks to be a professional camera.
I did a career in television news / sports photography. On occasion I was asked to shoot a concert as part of the news show. Every time, I was allowed to roll on the artist for no more than 30-seconds.
They view this camera as the same thing - you won't get in with it.
Apart from Jim's very valid explanation, I don't see the point of recording a Live show. You are there to experience the concert with your own senses. Why watch it from your 3-inch LCD when the 300-foot wide stage is right in front of you? If you want to have a copy of the concert, wait for DVD to come out.
