How to use bokeh on my Nikon D3100?

I have the Nikon D3100 with the standard 18-55 mm lens and want to know how to be able to take pics where a main object is in focus while the rest of the background is blurred.
Sample pic:

You can't focus that close with the 18-55mm. A good lens to get would be the Micro Nikkor AF-S 60mm f2.8

This question gets asked here at least 20 times a day. Why don 't YOU help a brotha out and use the search box instead of making us type the same answer over and over.

It's a function of three things. Sensor size, aperture and distance to the subject.
You've got two covered, and one you can't really get with this lens.
You've got a large image sensor in the camera, you can get close to your subject (a person or flower) but that kit lens doesn't have a large aperture (small f stop number)
Buy a cheap 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. I don't think it will autofocus on the entry level Nikon you've got. You can sorta kinda get that effect with your lens. Get close, open up the apeture (get out of auto mode, and into aperture priority mode) and you will get blurred backgrounds, just not as strong as you can with a f/2.8 or f/1.8 lens.
Now help all the brothas out and do your research, it's all available on the web for free.
