How to use an external Microphone with ipod touch 2nd gen?

As a hobby I make videos and I use a Nikon d3100 to record my video however the audio sucks on it and you can hear the camera focusing. So I bought an audio technica ATR6250 microphone to record my audio. My plan was also to purchase a digital voice recorder and just plug the mic into that to record my audio separately. I was thinking the other day and thought that I might be able to use this mic with my ipod touch to record the audio instead of spending the money on a digital recorder. Is there any way to do this, when I plug it in and go to the voice memos it doesn't pick up the mic. I know that they sell mics specifically for the ipod touch but I would like to use the one that I already have.

Hate to break it to you, but the iPod probably doesn't recognize or support the microphone. I used to have one before i upgraded to the 4th gen and it was very picky about which microphones it wanted to work.
